Super sunflowers prove popular at cafe

The Bridge Project Sunflowers

The Bridge Project Sunflowers

The Bridge Project had a rather unexpected seasonal display of flowers at the Bradbury Courtyard Café this year. While gardeners chose to grow a bed of spring onions, the sunflowers had other ideas! Some of the seed must have remained and germinated in the soil from when they were planted last year and the result is rather spectacular.

They were originally planted in 2011 to bring wildlife to the courtyard. Students at The Bridge Project wanted to see them flower and watch the birds that come to feed off their seeds.  Since planting, students have been heavily involved in maintaining the sunflowers; they are frequently watered and dead-headed by them in a joint effort to keep them growing.

The sunflowers are available for everyone to see from the Café. Gardening tutor, Emma Eynon says ‘visitors have said they are some of the biggest sunflowers they have seen’.
