An interview with our Senior Graphic Designer, Angela Balaam
Angela joined Mackman in 2008 and now leads our print-based media design projects. Angela also specialises in branding and more recently she has comfortably developed complementary skills in website design. Her project management skills are invaluable in our busy design studio… and her chocolate brownies are to die for.
Q: What is your working background?
A: Before Mackman I worked in Bury St. Edmunds for 8½ years: firstly at a design, PR and marketing company and then at an independent estate agents, where I created new advertising campaigns and promotional material for all of their offices in East Anglia.
Q: What is it like working at Mackman?
A: Mackman is a strong flexible team that is constantly working together to improve in every aspect of what we do. It’s great to be back as part of a design team having worked as the only designer in the office for so long. I love having other design-minded colleagues to bounce ideas off.
Q: What lead you to a career in design?
A: I was always making things as a child, and I was surrounded by creative people in my family on both sides so it was a natural progression. I nearly went in to fashion. My tutor at art college recognised that I had a good eye for pattern and colour, and graphic design won out in the end!
Q: Favourite logo or ad?
A: The London Underground is a simple but classic logo and also the Tube Map, which is an excellent example of information design. Both are simple but highly effective. I also like the Ikea kitchen advert: very clever (always find him in the kitchen at parties…).
Q: What fires your imagination and inspires you?
A: My imagination is constantly active (sometimes a bit too much). I love collecting things like interesting seashells, pebbles and postcards (or anything else that catches my eye). I like to look to my surroundings for inspiration of colours, shapes etc. I am also a magazine addict and love to keep ahead of the seasons’ trends.
Q: How would your colleagues describe you?
A: Organised, versatile, has a good sense of humour and loves stripes!
Q: What is important in your life, and how do you go about achieving it?
A: To be happy and healthy and make the most of each day. Spending time with family and friends (there’s never enough time). I love to be outside when I can; in the garden pottering about or going for long walks by the coast. I also enjoy baking, especially chocolate brownies.
Q: What are your future goals?
A: To do the best I can throughout my life and to learn new skills along the way. With technology constantly changing and the design world evolving with it, it’s good to keep pace with new developments, embrace new ideas and explore creative possibilities!
