Mackman’s global project…

Atlas showing Political Imprisonment

Mackman has started work on one of its biggest projects to date. The Institute for Democracy and Conflict Resolution (IDCR) draws on the research, training, and practical expertise developed over the last 40 years at the University of Essex in the areas of democracy, conflict, human rights, justice, and governance.

The Institute provides a portal for sharing and accessing knowledge based on rigorous social scientific analysis, legal and normative frameworks, and practical experience of working on national and international projects and programmes.

Mackman has been invited to create an online solution for visualising key human rights data through a combination of interactive maps, graphs and plots. Whether plotting disappearance, torture, womens’ rights or life expectancy at birth, users will be able to see how the countries compare using the Human Rights Atlas.

James Royce, Mackman’s Digital Services manager is leading the team and says, ‘It’s such an exciting piece of work because of what it can do, and who is going to use it. Visitors to the site will be able to customise their searches and order prints of the map detailing their search results.’ The data will be accessed by five main groups, ranging from universities to NGOs and international organisations such as the United Nations and the European Commission.

Dr. Todd Landman, IDCR Director says, ‘We are delighted that the Economic and Social Research Council have funded the development of this invaluable resource and working with Mackman means we will have the very best that information technology can deliver for our user groups and clients.’
